It’s truly amazing how our culture (really every culture on earth) has fallen for the ultimate lie, about the liar himself.  You see, if you search for images of Satan, every one is an evil looking caricature, usually with horns… scary looking.  How could anyone find interest in following that.  The truth is Satan is not scary looking.

Of course if you search for angel, you get an equally skewed image.  Almost always women or babies, something beautiful and peaceful.  The truth is, angels are not underwear models.

You see, angels are beautiful but fierce creatures.  They are warriors, strong and powerful.  And Satan was considered one of the best angels, so he is also beautiful, powerful and fierce.

But Satan, being the master of lies, has convinced almost everyone that the ‘devil’ is this red faced, horned, evil looking creature… so when you’re faced with an angel of deceit, you are naturally deceived into thinking he’s not all that bad.  It worked for Eve and it still works today.

At the same time if you believe that angels are underwear models or cute little babies, can they really come to your rescue?  Can they really fend off an army of demons?  No, so you loose hope.

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11)

Don’t believe these lies.  Satan was once one of the greatest of angels, but he was so vain and prideful he felt he could be God himself.  In Isaiah 14:13-14

You said in your heart,
    ‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
    I will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
    in the far reaches of the north;
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
    I will make myself like the Most High.

Just has he never lost his pride or vanity, he also never lost his appearance or power either.  But all is not lost.  There is but ONE way you can discern the ways of the evil one and that is with the power of the Holy Spirit.

“for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil” (Hebrews 5:14)

With the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of you, and you staying in regular connection with God through prayer and the study of His word… you will be able to discern the evil one.  It will be as obvious to you as those cartoon images of a man in a red horned suit.

Pray diligently for the power of discernment through the Spirit.  Stay connected to the source without ceasing.  Only with His power will you be able to withstand the powers and temptations of Satan.

Any the beautiful thing is, even when you mess up and fall to the flesh temporarily, His beautiful and free gift of grace is there to wipe the slate clean again (but that’s another blog).
