“Meet the Parents” was a very funny movie.  This issue with the lie detector was hilarious.  Although Jack Byrnes had the physical machine, he really didn’t need the machine because he was trained to spot the indicators himself.  Now no lie detector is admissible in court (machine or human) because none are actually flawless.  However there are certain principals that apply.  The machine (or the human) simply observes certain bio-metric feedback from the candidate; heart rate, pupil dilation, nervous movement, etc.

Did you know that God give every one of His adopted children, a lie detector as a ‘welcome to the family’ gift?  When we receive the Holy Spirit, we receive a kind of power that is beyond our comprehension.  One of those powers is the ability to detect or discern false spirits.  No, this power will not make it so you can detect ever human lie out there (although it does help some), but it is designed to help you test other spirits to insure they are from God and not Satan.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.” (1 John 4:1-3)

‘Many false prophets’.  The simplest test of the spirits is, do they confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, come in the flesh to be our Lord and Savior.?  Any spirit that claims otherwise is not of God.  It really is that simple.  Evil spirits will acknowledge to know Jesus, but they cannot claim Him to be their Lord and Savior.  Any person (or faith) that considers Jesus to be a prophet or teacher (but not God Himself) is by definition not an adopted son or daughter.

What’s fascinating about this part of John’s letter is that you would expect there to be some sort of judgmental text to follow about not associating with non believers or something.  But John follows this text up with love.

How do these two things go together?  And how does a false prophet attempt to twist these two things into a contradiction?  That is where the biggest lie of them all comes in.

The Holy Spirit tells us to test the spirit of others, to ensure they are of God or not.  We are still to love them (for they are lost sheep) but we are not to fall for their temptations.  We are not to accept their ways and pretend they are OK, when they are not.  If you love your friend and they are about to do something dangerous or wrong… do you say “Well if that’s what you want to do, then it must be OK” or do you attempt to help them see why what they are doing is wrong.  True love will not simply stand by and watch their friend do something dangerous.

The enemy tries to say if we do not agree or accept their actions, we don’t love them… in fact we must actually hate them.  Since we don’t ever want to be considered haters, many Christians will not listen to the Spirit inside them and will fall for this lie.  They will believe that disagreeing with a lifestyle choice is somehow hatred.  They will believe the lie that love accepts all.

Listen to the Spirit inside of you.  The Holy Spirit knows right from wrong and insists that you “Live a life in a manner worthy of the Gospel” (Phil 1:27).  Accepting behavior that is contradictory to the Spirit inside you is not love, it is blindly falling for the lies of the enemy.

Love your neighbor.  Love your brother.  Love your enemy.  True love means wanting them to see the light, not continue to live in the darkness of Satan’s lies.
