Have you ever looked around the world, at the craziness of people… at their utter disdain for anything faith based… and wondered if you were all that was left?  Elijah felt this way.  When the world around him was crumbling and all in his field of vision were abandoning God, when it seemed that all hope was lost, God was not without a plan.  Paul spoke of it almost a thousand years later and I share it almost a couple thousand years again.

After facing off against the false god of Baal, Elijah felt alone and knew his life was in danger.  He turned to God for a status update (as if God did not already know the status), “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.”” (Rom 11:3)  Elijah felt that all had betrayed God and turned their backs on Him and instead turned toward the false god of Baal.

But God did not leave Elijah alone.  “But what is God’s reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”” (Rom 11:4)  God was always at work, and there were thousands of men that were still solid in God’s camp.  Notice that He even said ‘I have kept’, it was not their actions or works but His grace that kept them, ready for when the time was right.

Today, especially on the west coast, it is so easy to look around at the world and wonder, how many solid Christians are really left.  When so many have turned from the one true God and sought other false idols to worship, it can become more and more difficult to find those who ‘have not bowed the knee to…’ (fill in the blank on the idol of choice).

But God will not abandon or forsake us.  He will keep for himself an army of people who have not bowed the knee.  We may not always know they are there, but they are.  They may have kept silent and in the background and remained unnoticed.  This is not out of cowardice but out of patience.  Their time has not yet come.  But God will deploy them in His time.

In Elijah’s time, there were many false gods, Baal was just one example of the most popular.  In our time, there are even more false gods, idols for people to turn their allegiance and energy towards.  Just like Baal, these false gods cannot stand up when truly tested.  Be patient, have faith, you’re not alone.

God has kept for himself…. you!
