In the mid to late 80’s, Dire Straits wrote a song that basically took the view of an average hard working dude looking at these “Yo-yo’s” on MTV making all this money doing nothing. The opening verse goes like this…
Now look at them yo-yo’s that’s the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain’t workin’ that’s the way you do it
Money for nothin’ and chicks for free
The last line of that verse is the title line and the point of this blog. It’s about the enemy’s promise to give something (Money and Sex) for nothing. And this is one of his favorite tactics… promise what you crave with little or no effort. This is as old as promising to give the knowledge of good and evil at almost zero cost, just the bite of a piece of fruit… yet it cost everything.
The book of Hebrews is the major theological letter that is written primarily to the Jews of the day. It is filled with incredible truths about who Christ is as well as instructions on how to live for Him. In its closing, the author basically sums up much of these instructions, one of those summations being, “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said,“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”” (Heb 13:4-5)
We live in a culture that makes this seem normal. It says that sex outside of marriage is OK, normal, expected in fact. It also suggests that you need more and more money to buy more and more stuff to impress more and more people. We are constantly bombarded with marketing that tries to tell us that we deserve all of this and more. And it’s very true that God will judge this behavior.
That’s why I am thankful He a God of such grace. Without the grace of Jesus Christ, I would have been expected to live perfectly to avoid His judgement. This means sex before marriage would have brought judgement. This means pursuit of easy money and valuing money to high, would have brought judgement. I would have been found guilty of both. But by the grace of Jesus Christ, I have been pardoned. I have been given an immunity deal that is truly amazing.
As I look at the things that I should be found guilty of and realize that He has paid the price already, it truly amazes me. Recognizing how permanent and all encompassing this immunity is, can lead to only two responses.
One response is one of sinister abuse. Someone who receive immunity and then abuses that immunity for their own pleasure. However, since God is the ultimate judge, only He knows if someone has claimed an immunity deal without ever really giving themselves to Him. If they have faked it, they will be judged.
However the right response, when that immunity deal was given as a result of genuine submission to the King, is reverence, elation, joy and celebration. As a result of this amazing deal (which I did not deserve by the way), I am in awe. I want to celebrate the fact that his immunity deal is available to all who believe. I want to praise Him, worship Him, and give Him all of the glory of any success I have from that point forward. Because without His salvation, I am nothing… but through Him, I am the adopted son of the Lord of Hosts.
