The text in this graphic symbolizes one of the most misquoted verses in the Bible. The out of context quote is usually shared like this. “Money is a root of all kinds of evil.” In addition to this, there are plenty of other passages that really talk down about wealth. James has perhaps the darkest remarks towards the rich. “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.” (Jam 5:1-3)
There are plenty of other remarks against the rich, so taken out of context, it could appear that having wealthy is a sure way to Hell. However this would be a sad misinterpretation of scripture. Let’s start with the Timothy quote, the one from the graphic above. The full text reads, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” (1 Tim 6:10) There are three key points in this passage that distinguish it from the graphic above.
The love of… Timothy does not say that money is evil, he says the love of money is the problem. Some have such a love for money that it becomes an idol and violates the first commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exod 20:3)
Through this craving… This refers to the addictive and covetous impact that money can have on people. “You shall not covet…” (Exod 20:17) Never enough, desiring more and more to fulfill the void. Since the real void is Him, money can never fill it so you seek more and more and never satisfy.
Some have wandered… Even in this text, Timothy acknowledges that money does not pull everyone down, but by calling it a root of all kinds of evil, he is showing that it is a gateway to so many forms of downfall so strong that some have wandered away from the faith all together.
Money is a tool. It is used to send missionaries around the world, build worship centers, pay salaries of pastors, feed the poor, supply medical supplies and disaster relief around the world. This list goes on. Money has no soul so it is neither good nor evil. But think of it this way. When Eve and Adam took a bite of the fruit, there was nothing in the fruit that actually lead to their death, but it was the craving of that fruit and putting the desire of that fruit above God’s rules… that is what led to the fall. Money is the same. Nothing in money itself causes someone to fall… but that craving to have more, that love to gain more… those emotional draws to the money… that is where the problem is that leads to all kinds of evil.
Make God first in your finances. Surrender it to Him. Earn more to serve Him. But always keep Him first.
